On Wednesday 13th April I represented the United Reformed Church at the Induction of Rev Michael Heaney as Moderator of the Free Churches Group and one of the Presidents of Churches Together in England. The Free Churches Group consists of twenty four denominations who, with a shared basis of Christian faith, collaborate with each other and promote fellowship and united action, where possible with other branches of the Church. The Group focuses the collective Free Church contributions to health care, prison chaplaincy and education policy and provides a means of representation to Government and others. Michael Heaney is the General Secretary of the Congregational Federation and will serve as Moderator of the Free Churches Group for a period of four years.
The induction took place at the Bunyan Meeting Free Church in Bedford, a historic building and a church with a long history. I joined other representatives of member denominations to welcome and give greetings to Michael on your behalf.
Two points to ponder from Michael’s sermon
- Who will not hear of God’s love if we continue to do what we are doing now?
- A reminder that we are FREE churches giving us the freedom to do what is required in order to witness to God in the contexts in which we are placed.
