28th April is Workers Memorial Day

My involvement with this day comes as part of my workplace chaplaincy role not strictly as Moderator of General Assembly. As a chaplain in the steel industry I have seen at first hand the effect a fatality can have on colleagues in the workplace. Workers Memorial Day is a Trades Union initiative to remember those who have been killed, injured or made ill by their work and to strengthen the campaign for safe and healthy working practices.

In Doncaster for a number of years I have led a short service around a tree which has been planted in the market place as a permanent memorial. During the service we remember those who have been killed and injured and the pain and suffering of their families and colleagues. We also pray for everyone striving to improve the work environment, Trades Union Officials and Safety Officers, managers and politicians.
